ABOUT GEITA GOLD MINING LTD
One of Tanzania's most prominent gold producers is Geita Gold Mining Ltd (GGML), which has a single operation in the Geita Region. The South African-based international gold producer AngloGold Ashanti has activities in over 10 countries across four continents, and the corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of that firm. Just 85 kilometers from Mwanza City and 20 kilometers southeast of the nearest point of Lake Victoria is the mine in the Lake Victoria Gold fields of Northwestern Tanzania. Geita, a rapidly developing hamlet just 5 kilometers west of the main office, and Dar es Salaam serve as the company's auxiliary offices. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
This position reports to the Superintendent Rigging and is responsible for ensuring that all rigging and heavy lifting operations at the mine site are done safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all applicable rules. In addition to supervising all lifting operations on the mine site, the Specialist—Crane & Rigging is in charge of keeping track of and assuring the maintenance of all lifting gear, equipment, and cranes. In addition, they will work with other teams to improve operational safety and efficiency, as well as teach and instruct the rigging and crane crew and any outside contractors that use the mine.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Three-year National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) or its equivalent, or an apprenticeship.
• Certificate for Operator in Good Standing.
• An accreditation in scaffolding.
• Rigger/ropesman certification from an international organization.
• A certificate from the International Rigging Standard Level 3.
The ability to lift heavy objects safely requires the LMI certificate.
• The International Certification Body recognized me as an expert in administering and evaluating technical exams.
• A current driver's license from Tanzania (Class B, D, E, or F) or another country
To provide trainings, you must be certified by an authorized training board.
An authorized rigger who has been registered.
EXPERIENCE:
• Four years of experience in lifting, rigging, and cranes.
• Five years of experience operating cranes and working as riggers and ropesmen.
Possess a minimum of one year of supervisory experience, ideally in the mining industry (specifically in "Lifting Operations").
• Proven ability to operate rigging equipment is required.
• Familiarity with laws and regulations pertaining to lifting and rigging gear for mine safety.
• Abilities in computation and mathematics.
Certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 and OSHA 300 (No. 05 of 2003).
• Thorough familiarity with lifting and rigging essential controls.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Computer skills, especially the MS Office package.
• Basic Computer Design Skills using CAD Software
• Must be well-versed in English (written and spoken).
• Mining regulations knowledge.
MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Coaching, mentorship, and training
• Accountable for the scheduling of training and development of inline direct reports and coaching identifiable and recognized skills gaps. Continuing education for those who operate cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment
• Keep track of certifications for workers working on the rigging and lifting industry at the mine site and conduct performance examinations and hands-on performance testing for rigging and lifting programs to verify personnel are certified.
2. Operational Planning and Coordination
• Provide support in organizing and carrying out heavy lifting tasks that are essential to the construction of new machinery or buildings.
• Assist with the building of essential mine site infrastructure, move heavy equipment, and install machinery.
• For complicated or risky lifting tasks, such as carrying commodities, lifting huge structures, or heavy mining equipment, create and execute comprehensive lifting plans.
Effectively organize and perform lifting tasks by collaborating with other departments.
• Plan lifting operations in conjunction with site supervisors to keep operations running smoothly.
3. Inspections
· Examine any accidents or near misses that occurred during lifting operations at GGM, determine what went wrong, and put measures in place to make things safer going forward.
If there is an accident, incident, transgression, or safety violation involving lifting, you must report it to management in detail and provide suggestions for how to rectify the situation.
4. Legislative requirements
• Instruct operatives on their obligations with respect to statutory requirements relating to Lifting Operations, Tanzania Mining regulations and OSHA ,2003(No.05 of 2003, Section 14-22.
5. Enforcing Safety and Procedures
Maintain a zero-tolerance policy for noncompliance and consistently advocate for a safety-first culture.
• Determining if trainees are competent by teaching them how to use and inspect rigging gears, slings, and below-the-hook lifting devices before each usage.
Lifting activities at the mine site must adhere to stringent AGA safety standards to avoid accidents in a high-risk area. Trainees must operate all equipment safely under the supervision of trainers.
• Whether you're working in an underground, open-pit, or surface mine, you should always be doing risk assessments and hazard analysis.
• Make sure that everyone is following all lifting safety procedures, including using the right rigging, operating the crane correctly, and wearing the proper personal protective equipment.
6. Managing and Maintaining Equipment
• Manage the procurement, evaluation, and upkeep of mining-related hoists, cranes, and other lifting equipment, including big, specialized machines used to move huge, heavy objects.
• Make that all lifting gear is up to code and suitable for its intended use.
Minimize downtime and maximize equipment safety by organizing scheduled maintenance and emergency repairs.
