Business Environment

The "Global Network of Farmers Markets" project was launched by FAO in July 2023. The project's overarching goal is to help small-scale producers become agents of economic, social, and environmental sustainability by studying and promoting various forms of farmers markets and collective mechanisms that allow them to participate in sustainable food systems. Through this, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between customers and small-scale farmers by increasing their access to markets and creating systems to recognise the worth of locally produced goods.
The project is structured around three main goals: 1) Improving the World Farmers Markets Coalition in terms of outreach and advocacy and technical expertise; 2) conducting country-based mappings of farmers markets to gather evidence on various models and how they contribute to sustainable agrifood systems; and 3) building the capacity of farmers markets associations.
With the help of FAO Tanzania, the Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division of FAO (ESP) in Rome, Italy, is carrying out the project. The FAO is looking to recruit a Junior Specialist to help with the mapping of Tanzanian farmer's markets.
