Opening for a Junior Specialist to Assist with Farmers Market Mapping at the FAO

 Project "Global Network of Farmers Markets," which FAO began implementing in July 2023, The project's overarching goal is to help small-scale producers become agents of economic, social, and environmental sustainability by studying and promoting various forms of farmers markets and collective mechanisms that allow them to participate in sustainable food systems. Developing methods to value local products and connect farmers with consumers, as well as increasing access to markets for small-scale farmers, are the goals of the initiative.

First, the World Farmers Markets Coalition will be strengthened both technically and in terms of outreach and advocacy. Second, a global farmers markets report will be systematized based on evidence gathered from country-based mappings of farmers markets. Third, the project will work to strengthen farmers market associations by developing their capacity.

In close collaboration with FAO Tanzania, the project is carried out by the Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division of FAO (ESP) based in Rome (Italy). A junior specialist is being sought for by FAO to aid in the mapping of Tanzanian farmers' markets.

Reporting Lines

The Assistant FAO Representative (AFAOR-P) and the project team in Tanzania Mainland provide overall advice to the Junior Specialist on Farmers Market Mapping Support, who reports to the FAO Representative. The service provider carrying out the mapping, the FAO Country Office Programme Associate, and the HQ Project Coordinator will all be closely collaborating with this individual.

Technical Focus

The incumbent will provide support to MVIWATA for farmers market data and the establishment of a data analysis and reporting.

Tasks And Responsibilities

Assist in coordinating stakeholders' meetings and preliminary interviews with key informants in order to validate the mapping sample, as directed by the ESP Project Coordinator.
Take part in the online training session covering the study's methodology that will last for three days.
Arrange for key informant interviews and focus groups, and otherwise help get the mapping tasks done in the field.
 Keep an eye on the data gathering procedure
 As the mapping process comes to a close, it is important to convene a stakeholder gathering to discuss the results, identify areas that could use improvement, and brainstorm ways to provide policy and programmatic support to farmers markets.
Carry out additional responsibilities as directed by the supervisor.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

Postgraduate education in a relevant discipline, such as agricultural economics, agricultural science, or agriculture, or a closely connected field
 Must have a minimum of one year of expertise in agricultural marketing, data analysis, and program development.
 Fluency in Swahili and English
 Either a citizen of Tanzania or a legal permanent resident with a valid work visa
