About Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU)

The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) is a research unit located at the National Institute for Medical Research campus in Mwanza, Tanzania. MITU’s mission is to improve health by developing and evaluating interventions against HIV and other health issues through research and clinical trials. The unit is dedicated to enhancing research capacity in Tanzania and East Africa and translating research findings into health policy.

MITU is launching a four-year, multi-country study called RESHAPE, aimed at improving business continuity for health services during extreme weather events in low- and middle-income countries. Position 1: Research Assistant [Multiple Positions]

Role Overview
The Research Assistant will support data collection for the RESHAPE study, conducting both qualitative and quantitative research. This includes transcribing interviews, analyzing data, and preparing reports under the guidance of the Research Fellows and Principal Investigator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate data collection activities for qualitative research.
  • Collect data through workshops, focus group discussions, and interviews.
  • Transcribe and translate data into English, managing the collected data.
  • Assist with data analysis and report writing.
  • Work closely with the research team to ensure smooth execution of study activities.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, social sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a research assistant.
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili.
  • GCP certification for conducting human research.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience in research involving extreme weather events.
  • Knowledge of qualitative data management software or STATA.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and meet deadlines.

Position 2: Research Fellow [1 Position]

Role Overview
The Research Fellow will lead the qualitative research for the RESHAPE study. This involves designing research protocols, conducting data collection, analyzing results, and contributing to publications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement qualitative research protocols.
  • Lead data collection through interviews, focus groups, and workshops.
  • Analyze qualitative data and interpret findings.
  • Write and publish research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Provide mentorship to research assistants and supervise team members.
  • Contribute to writing manuscripts drafted by others.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Ph.D. in public health, social sciences, anthropology, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in qualitative research methods.
  • Proven record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong communication skills in English and Swahili.
  • Excellent project management and leadership skills.
  • GCP certification.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience working on research related to extreme weather events.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Strong managerial and organizational skills.
