Position Objectives

As a Midwife at MSF, you’ll provide essential care to pregnant women and newborns, offering support before, during, and after delivery. You’ll follow MSF’s obstetric and reproductive health guidelines, ensure hygiene standards are met, and help avoid complications post-delivery. All under the guidance of a specialist doctor, your goal is to maintain the health of both mothers and babies.

Main Responsibilities

  • Antenatal and Postnatal Care: Provide ongoing care to expectant mothers and their babies, including family planning, obstetrics, neonatal care, and management of sexual violence victims.
  • PMTCT Protocol: If implemented, ensure proper execution of the PMTCT protocol during ANC, delivery, and PNC consultations (pre-counseling, testing, and post-counseling).
  • Referrals: Evaluate the feasibility of transferring pregnant women from TBAs to the OPD/MCH for evaluation or complicated deliveries.
  • Hygiene & Sterilization: Maintain high hygiene standards according to MSF specifications, including sterilizing equipment and following universal precautions.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean and maintain biomedical equipment as per the user manual. Notify the supervisor of any malfunctions.
  • Supplies Management: Ensure a steady supply of necessary drugs and equipment for maternity services, keeping track of stock levels and ordering as needed.
  • Newborn Care: Monitor all newborns until discharge, educating mothers and families on the importance of breastfeeding, vaccination, and avoiding harmful traditional practices.
  • Patient Privacy: Uphold patient confidentiality and ensure their rights are respected.
  • Administrative Duties: Ensure all admission and hospitalization paperwork complies with MSF protocols. Verify that patients are properly informed and receive required documents (e.g., birth certificate, vaccination card).
  • Shift Handover: Coordinate with other midwives and the maternity ward supervisor for smooth shift changes, especially for high-risk cases.

You will conduct normal deliveries independently and manage emergencies according to MSF’s protocols, including identifying when referral is necessary.
