Required Qualifications for the Driver Role
- Education: Basic literacy skills and a Class D driving license are essential.
- Experience: At least 2 years of driving experience. Experience with 4x4 vehicles and previous work with MSF or other NGOs is a plus.
- Languages: Fluency in English and Swahili is essential. Knowledge of Kirundi or French is beneficial.
Job Objectives
As an MSF driver, you'll coordinate and oversee vehicle operations according to traffic rules and MSF safety policies. You'll also support the team of drivers to ensure safe, efficient transport of people and supplies.
Key Responsibilities
- Vehicle Checks: Inspect the vehicle daily for tire condition, fuel, brakes, radio equipment, and other essentials. Perform weekly checks following the MSF Logbook, refill as needed, and keep the vehicle clean.
- Passenger Safety: Drive responsibly, stick to speed limits, follow traffic rules, and follow MSF safety guidelines to prevent accidents.
- Documentation: Make sure all passengers have the correct papers before trips. Non-MSF passengers need to sign liability waivers before traveling.
- Loading and Unloading: Check that the vehicle is properly loaded and unloaded, submit documents to the goods receiver, and return completed paperwork to the Logistics team.
- Documentation Compliance: Keep all vehicle papers and the driver’s license up-to-date and available in the vehicle.
- Incident Reporting: Report any incidents involving passengers or cargo to your line manager promptly.
- Radio Communication: Use radio equipment according to MSF communication protocols to report position and any security issues.
- Security Protocols: Follow vehicle movement security guidelines, particularly at customs, checkpoints, and roadblocks. Make sure all passengers are aware of these rules.
Skills and Competencies
- Core Skills: Flexibility, commitment, stress management, and teamwork.
- Technical Skills: Basic mechanical knowledge is an advantage.
- Geographical Knowledge: Familiarity with local roads is essential.
- Other Requirements: Good eyesight and willingness to travel and stay overnight outside of the base.
