Tanzania Career Opportunity

HJFMRI is looking for an Accounting Assistant to support the accounting team. This person will handle key accounting tasks and ensure HJFMRI complies with Tanzania tax regulations and USG (United States Government) requirements. The job includes managing document collection, filing, and follow-up with government entities to ensure VAT claims and tax returns are processed on time. Most work will be in the office, with occasional travel for document submission and follow-up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and organize all documents needed for VAT exemption and refund processes.
  • Print, photocopy, and prepare documents for submission.
  • Submit tax returns, exemptions, and VAT claims quarterly to USG, the line ministry, and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).
  • Follow up with USG, the line ministry, and TRA on document approval status.
  • Coordinate with TRA to confirm approved documents and file them accurately.
  • Track VAT refund progress with TRA and work to speed up approved refunds.
  • Submit instructions to Accounts Payable to record VAT claims in the system and update the VAT tracker for all receipts.
  • Keep hard-copy and electronic files organized for tax exemption and VAT refund documents, tracking claim status.
  • Prepare monthly tax return and VAT claim reports for the finance team.
  • Inform management of any issues or delays in tax exemptions and VAT refunds.

Accounting and Administrative Support

  • Help process vendor and program participant payments, ensuring all paperwork is complete and follows policy.
  • Support month-end and year-end processes by making sure all VAT claims and exemptions are recorded and balanced.
  • Update accounting software with data on VAT refunds, claims, and exemptions to match financial records.
  • Work with the finance team to reconcile VAT accounts and tax returns for audits and financial reporting.
  • Help the team stay compliant with audit requirements related to VAT and tax exemptions.
  • Assist with other general accounting tasks, like data entry, documentation, and filing as needed.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience in accounting or finance, ideally with tax process knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Familiarity with VAT claims, tax exemptions, tax returns, and Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) regulations.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, especially Oracle EBS, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills for coordinating with government agencies and internal teams.

Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based work.
