Job Summary

As the SME Banker, your main role will be managing a portfolio of Business Banking Enterprise customers. You’ll build strong, long-lasting relationships by offering efficient and reliable support. Quick assessments of risks and consistent, high-quality service will be key parts of your role. The ultimate goal is to grow the portfolio while managing risk effectively.

Main Responsibilities: Sales and Service (70%)

  • Annual Reviews: Each year, you’ll review your customers’ borrowing facilities. If their situation changes, you’ll conduct an interim review to reassess risk.
  • Growing the Portfolio: You’ll actively look for ways to grow your own portfolio and cross-sell products to meet set targets.
  • Consultations: Provide advice to business owners on financial or credit issues, and share general business ideas to help them grow.
  • Communication: Make sure key messages—like service standards, pricing, and any product changes—are communicated to customers clearly and effectively.
  • Complaint Resolution: Handle any customer complaints swiftly and efficiently.
  • Product Recommendations: Identify the best products for your customers’ needs and be ready to sell them both reactively and proactively.
  • Business Development: Plan and coordinate any marketing approaches for new business while continuing to strengthen relationships with current customers.
  • Risk Management: Ensure that all services and transactions adhere to risk standards.

Additional Responsibilities: Business Management (25%)

  • Targeting New Business: Research potential new clients and follow up on leads to bring in fresh business.
  • Customer Prioritization: Use the Customer Prioritization Guidelines to assess the value of current and potential clients.
  • Credit Applications: Gather the information needed for credit applications and input key details like judgmental information.
  • Portfolio Management: Keep a close eye on the quality of your portfolio. Use risk triggers to prevent any issues and follow the bank’s risk management guidelines.
  • Early Warning List: Manage any clients on the “Early Warning List” to minimize risk.

Staff Management (5%)

You’ll also coordinate the Business Banking customer management within your branch, making sure service quality is consistent across the board.


Risk and Control Objective

If any major issues come up within your business unit, you’ll be the crisis coordinator, ensuring tasks are delegated to the right people. You’ll also regularly review the unit’s risk and compliance profiles, providing advice to the Managing Director when needed. It’s important to stay updated on industry changes and regulations, so you can keep your team informed on how these impact the business.


Required Skills and Competencies

This role requires a range of skills, including:

  • Relationship Management: You’ll need excellent people skills to manage customer relationships.
  • Risk Management: You’ll be making key decisions based on risk assessments, so this is a must.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership and teamwork skills are needed to manage your portfolio and coordinate with other departments.
  • Product Knowledge: You’ll need a detailed understanding of Business Banking products and services to effectively meet the needs of your clients.
  • Communication Skills: Clear communication is key in this role, especially when dealing with financial controllers and business owners.

You’ll also need to know about the products available in the Personal Sector to help meet the personal financial needs of business owners.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: A business degree is preferred.
  • Training: You should have some background in risk assessment, management, communication, presentation, influencing, and negotiating.
  • Experience: You’ll need at least two years of experience in customer relationship management, especially with business clients. You should be able to communicate with financial controllers and business owners in a way that builds trust and credibility.
