A protection officer does what?
Working under direction of senior staff, you will be a Protection Officer. Developing and putting your protection plans into action for those in need will take front stage. This covers aspects including relocation, community-based protection, determination of refugee status (RSD), and education. Along with working with several stakeholders including local authorities and partner organisations, you will assist individuals in claiming their rights.
Important Share of Work
These are some of the tasks you will be handling in this capacity:
- You will be providing UNHCR and partners technical assistance on all protection-related issues.
Remain Updated: Watch the legal, political, social, and financial changes that might affect the terrain of protection. - Engage authorities: Strengthen asylum and RSD mechanisms working with national authorities.
- Create Strategies: Work with partners and government to design protection strategies that meet the particular needs of many groups—including women, children, and LGBTQ+ people.
- Make that the Country Operations Plan and other pertinent structures incorporate the protection plan.
- Encourage everyone to be following pertinent international laws and recommendations for protection.
- Community-based approaches: Develop protection plans with an eye towards communities and include individuals in decision-making procedures.
- Establish mechanisms to compile community comments so that programs and services might be strengthened.
- Oversaw particular protection situations, particularly those involving child protection and gender-based violence (GBV).
- Offer legal advice on protection concerns and make sure individuals in need have access to legal aid.
- Help to ensure compliance with the pertinent policies and help to manage data protection duties.
- Work on plans to avoid statelessness in the sphere of duty.
- Support initiatives for child protection and education so that the protection strategy may evolve.
- Prepare and supervise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for any kind of protective activity.
Who Is Qualified?
To be a qualified applicant for the Protection Officer post, you’ll need
- Experience: At least six years of pertinent experience following an undergraduate degree, five years following a graduate degree, or four years following a PhD.
- Education: One has a degree in political science, law, international law, refugee studies, or another allied topic.
- Professional Skills: Essential is knowledge of international refugee laws and human rights. You should also be quite analytical and research driven.
- Language Skills: Apart from the UN working language of the duty station, one must be proficient in English.
Extra Competencies
- Minimum four years of experience in human rights, internal displacement, or refugee protection.
- Good IT knowledge including database management and varied field expertise define desirable talents.
