Role Overview
The main goal of this position is to safely operate and maintain Packaging equipment and related processes to achieve optimal effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Operating and Process Control
- Operate sub-processes of the Packaging plant following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while ensuring quality control.
- Ensure raw materials meet company standards and address any deviations.
- Prepare the plant for start-up by confirming all inputs, utilities, documentation, and equipment are ready and verified.
- Start and operate the Packaging process while complying with safety requirements. Take corrective actions when needed to prevent non-standard products.
- Document any non-standard operations and adhere to Concession/Permit procedures.
- Shut down the plant according to Work Instructions (WI) and record any deviations.
- Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks, including sampling and measuring outputs.
- Control input usage by maintaining stock levels and conducting quality checks.
- Ensure plant availability through scheduled maintenance and assist team members in identifying breakdown causes while following safety protocols.
- Review process performance regularly and take corrective actions for any issues.
- Record waste and analyze trends to identify potential improvements.
- Respond quickly to triggers that could lead to out-of-control situations.
- Use problem-solving techniques to address issues, and maintain a clean work environment.
- Help fellow team members with their tasks.
Maintenance of Plant and Equipment
- Perform thorough cleaning, lubrication, and inspection of plant equipment as per SOPs or maintenance schedules.
- Carry out maintenance tasks according to the schedule and request artisan assistance when necessary.
- Report maintenance issues to the team leader for resolution.
- Assist Packaging Artisans with repairs during shifts.
- Complete all required documentation, including job cards and notifications.
Quality Control and Analysis
- Conduct quality checks and analyses as per SOPs, recording results accurately.
- Monitor quality performance against targets and identify problems early through trend analysis.
- Coach and mentor team members on quality checks.
- Identify and resolve quality issues using effective problem-solving methods.
Communication
- Engage in shift meetings, ask questions, and contribute ideas.
- Use gap lists to document issues and improvement opportunities.
- Understand team dashboards and take part in target review sessions.
- Stay informed by using shift logbooks for communication.
- Ensure smooth handovers with incoming shift teams regarding plant performance and quality.
Problem Solving
- Use techniques like Quick Fix Routines or the 5 Whys to resolve problems as they arise.
- Escalate unresolved issues to the team leader.
- Verify that resolved problems don’t reoccur.
- Participate in team problem-solving activities as needed.
Continuous Improvement
- Review trends using Short Interval Control charts to find ways to eliminate waste.
- Actively seek opportunities for continuous improvement and record them.
- Join regional or divisional plant optimization trials.
Voyager Plant Optimization Practices
- Follow Voyager Plant Optimization principles during all shifts.
- Focus on your growth and support team members’ development as part of the Global Competence Framework (SKAP).
- Manage your performance and engage in the company’s performance management practices.

Minimum Requirements
- Matric (Technical or with Mathematics)
- N3 as a minimum
- Mechanical or electrical aptitude
- One year of experience in an FMCG environment
- Basic PC literacy (Microsoft Office)
