Tembo Nickel Corporation (Tembo)
Location: Kagera
Tembo Nickel Corporation Limited (Tembo Nickel) is a mining company formed through a partnership agreement between Kabanga Nickel Limited and the Government of Tanzania. The agreement, made in January 2021, was set up to develop the Kabanga nickel deposits located in Ngara District, Kagera Region. Tembo Nickel, which is 84% owned by Kabanga Nickel and 16% by the Tanzanian government, focuses on mining, processing, and refining nickel for batteries, with cobalt and copper as by-products.
Kabanga is home to one of the largest undeveloped nickel sulphide deposits in the world, with significant potential for future exploration. Once fully operational, the Kabanga Nickel Project will produce refined battery-grade nickel, cobalt, and copper within Tanzania. The project will be supported by Tembo Nickel’s Kahama Multi-Metals Processing Facility (MMPF), which uses Hydromet Technology from Lifezone Metals. This method is far more efficient and environmentally friendly than traditional smelting. It also lowers costs, reduces carbon emissions, and is expected to contribute significantly to Tanzania’s economic growth.
