What You’ll Do as a Legal Officer
The Legal Officer will play a key role in ensuring JHCL follows all legal guidelines while managing risk and protecting the company’s interests. You’ll provide legal advice, manage contracts, and handle any regulatory matters to keep our operations running smoothly and safely.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Legal Compliance
- Ensure JHCL complies with local, national, and international mining laws and regulations.
- Stay updated on legislative changes and advise management accordingly.
- Develop and implement compliance procedures.
- Certify legal documents for the company.
2. Contract Management
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, ensuring they’re legally sound and aligned with the company’s interests.
- Oversee compliance with legal requirements for ongoing operations.
- Protect the company’s intellectual property rights (trademarks, patents, etc.).
- Handle filings for intellectual property protection.
3. Litigation and Dispute Resolution
- Represent JHCL in legal proceedings, including disputes and mediations.
- Work with external legal counsel when necessary to resolve legal issues.
4. Permitting and Licensing
- Assist in obtaining and renewing necessary permits and licenses for mining activities.
- Ensure compliance with permit conditions.
5. Health and Safety Compliance
- Provide legal advice on health and safety regulations to ensure safe mining operations.
6. Risk Management
- Identify and mitigate legal risks in collaboration with other departments.
7. Contract Disputes
- Resolve contractual disputes with suppliers, contractors, or other stakeholders.
- Negotiate solutions that protect the company’s interests.
8. Ethics and Corporate Governance
- Ensure JHCL operates according to ethical standards and corporate governance principles.
- Develop and implement corporate compliance programs.
- Assist in board meeting preparations and maintaining corporate records.
9. Capacity Building
- Provide legal training to employees and management.
- Keep the company updated on relevant legal developments.
What We’re Looking For
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB)
- Experience: Minimum 3 years in a legal role, preferably in mining or natural resources
- Professional Qualifications: Registered advocate of the High Court, admitted to the bar
- Skills: Strong knowledge of mining laws, excellent negotiation and communication abilities, proficiency in legal research, and experience with corporate governance.
