Hey there! So, CARE Canada is on the lookout for an Emergency Response Specialist to lead efforts focused on women in emergencies. If you’re passionate about making a difference and want to help women and girls affected by crises, this role might be perfect for you!

What This Role Is All About

You know how disasters and conflicts can really stretch resources thin? Well, that’s where you come in! CARE has set up a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to tackle these challenges. This team is made up of experienced professionals who spend about half their time deployed either overseas or remotely, offering support for emergency responses in various Country Offices (COs).

The RRT is crucial for getting things rolling quickly when crises happen. They’re ready to deploy anywhere in the world, ensuring CARE offices can start or scale up emergency operations efficiently.

Women and Girls Matter

CARE International is all about empowering women and girls. Their 2030 Global Strategy aims to boost the voice and leadership of 11 million women and girls in decisions that impact their lives. This involves standalone programs and integrating women’s leadership into all six of CARE’s main areas, including Climate Justice, Gender Equality, Humanitarian Action, and more.

The Women Lead in Emergencies (WLiE) model is one way CARE is making a difference. It focuses on working with women in crisis-affected areas, helping them actively participate in humanitarian efforts like preparedness, response, and recovery. The goal is to break down barriers and ensure women have a say in addressing their communities’ most pressing issues.

CARE is now rolling out this WLiE approach based on its pilot program from 2018 to 2021, along with an independent evaluation in 2022. This rollout is designed to help teams and communities effectively adapt this approach to their needs.

What You’ll Do as a WLiE Specialist

As a Women Lead in Emergencies Specialist on the RRT, your main job will be to provide top-notch technical support and programming services for CARE staff and partners. Here’s what you’ll need to bring to the table:

Your Experience Matters

  • Five+ years of experience in technical assistance related to gender and governance in crisis situations. This could be anything from women’s participation in leadership roles to ensuring accountability in humanitarian contexts.
  • Three+ years of field experience working with country teams in humanitarian settings.
  • Knowledge of international humanitarian aid and coordination systems, standards, and policies.
  • Familiarity with contemporary discussions on gender and governance within humanitarian and nexus settings.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. You should be able to break down complex ideas into simple terms.

Working Together

You’ll also need to have experience collaborating with women-led organizations and community groups. Building relationships across different backgrounds and cultures is essential, so being able to network with local agencies and international networks is a big plus.

Above all, you’ll need a strong commitment to CARE International’s mission, which emphasizes women’s rights, gender equality, and social justice. If you’ve got experience with feminist participatory techniques, community mobilization, and gender analysis, that’ll be a bonus!

What Makes You Stand Out

To really shine in this role, here’s what you should have:

  • Proficiency in another CARE language (like Arabic, French, or Spanish) would be great!
  • Experience with the WLiE methodology, though it’s not a requirement.
  • Specialized training in humanitarian/emergency response.
  • Knowledge of CARE’s WLiE training would be helpful.

Keeping Everyone Safe

Part of your role will be to promote a workplace culture that supports gender equality and trust. You’ll also create an environment free from sexual harassment and abuse. Ensuring high standards for prevention and response measures in line with CARE International’s policies is key.

What CARE Offers You

Here’s what you can expect when you join CARE Canada:

  • Salary range: CAD $88,000 – $95,000.
  • Comprehensive benefits package and an employee assistance program for you and your dependents right from day one.
