About SHDEPHA+
So, let’s talk about SHDEPHA+. This is a national non-profit organization in Tanzania that got its start back on November 21, 1994. They focus on helping folks living with HIV/AIDS and working to stop the spread of the disease. While they initially zeroed in on HIV/AIDS, over the years, they’ve branched out to tackle other important issues too. Now, they support anyone affected by HIV/AIDS and have more than 10 branches across the country!
The main office is in Kahama, Shinyanga Region, but they have operations in nine other regions throughout Tanzania. They work with a bunch of partners, including local and international donors, and they’re all about reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Their mission includes helping key and vulnerable groups like women, children, youth, and people with special needs. Plus, they pay special attention to those underserved and marginalized, especially people living with HIV.
SHDEPHA+ Vision and Mission
Vision: Imagine a community where there’s no poverty, hunger, or diseases—where everyone has access to good education and a decent quality of life. That’s the dream SHDEPHA+ is working towards!
Mission: SHDEPHA+ is all about fighting poverty (both income and non-income), hunger, and diseases. They empower marginalized groups and vulnerable populations to work towards sustainable human development.
Background on Their Projects
SHDEPHA+ is currently running a project funded by PEPFAR (the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) through the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). This project is part of the HIV Prevention Care and Support Program in the Southern Highlands. They’re collaborating with the Ministry of Health and local governments to offer community-based HIV prevention, care, treatment, and support services. This includes areas like Mbeya, Songwe, Ruvuma, Rukwa, and Katavi.
The goal is to help achieve UNAIDS’ 95-95-95 targets:
- 95% of people living with HIV knowing their status.
- 95% of those diagnosed receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART).
- 95% of those on ART achieving viral suppression.
In FY25, SHDEPHA+ will continue its work in Mbeya, focusing on three main areas: HIV/AIDS prevention, community-based HIV services (CBHS), and HIV testing and counseling services (HTS). They also address issues like gender-based violence (GBV) and provide pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), especially for young folks aged 15-24.
